For Cincinnati Reds outfielder Will Benson, staying patient has been the key throughout his career. Originally a 1st round pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, Benson struggled for his first few years in the minor leagues as many wrote him off and doubted his potential. However, even in the difficult seasons, Benson continued to work. Debuting for the Cleveland Guardians in the 2022 season, Benson has become a key piece of the Cincinnati Reds lineup in 2023. Benson’s story demonstrates his grit, motivation, and most importantly, his faith.

Growing up in Georgia, Benson was a star on the field from a young age. Committing to playing college baseball for Duke, Benson eventually instead went pro after being drafted before his college career began. As he developed on the field, his parents also made sure he knew that the person he was away from it was even more important. Benson says that they also made sure faith was a priority in his life from the beginning.

“Faith has always been a part of my life since I was a toddler. My parents have had me in the church since I was born. My father is an ordained minister and my mother was a Sunday school teacher, so they have taught me the importance of faith in the Lord at a young age. My faith continues to develop as I go through this journey of life.”

Although his first couple of full seasons in minor league baseball did not bring the results he wanted, Benson says that it has all prepared him for where he is today. Benson never looks back with regret, instead saying he is grateful for all the highs and lows. On the field, Benson says that without having faith, he doesn’t know how he’d do it.

“Faith is what gets me through baseball. Baseball challenges the mind due to the vast degree of change from game to game, ballpark to ballpark, and the amount of failure that comes with the game. With faith, I have the ability to minimize these obstacles and stay relaxed.”

After making his debut with Cleveland in 2022, Benson was traded to the Reds early in the 2023 season. Eventually being called up by the Reds, Benson quickly made his impact known. After launching his first career homer as a walk-off against the Dodgers, his emotion and joy were on full display as he rounded the bases. Although it has been a long journey, Benson says he knows it has all been a part of God’s plan.

Benson says that he has relied on Jeremiah 29:11 throughout his life and career, which says: “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, plans for a future and hope.” As he experienced the highs and lows of a professional baseball career early in life, he says that knowing God is in control helped him remain focused, grateful, and at peace.

“This verse reminds me that no matter what goes on in life, it’s in God’s hands. In His plans for us, there’s only prosperity, which gives me peace.”

As the Reds have become one of the most exciting teams in baseball throughout the 2023 season, they currently sit atop the NL Central and are in position to make the Postseason. With his focus on helping the Reds to a World Series, Benson makes it a priority to make an impact both on and off the field. Known for his work in the community, Benson started Future is Near, which is dedicated to empowering youth to achieve their dreams and make a difference. Throughout his career, Benson continues to inspire both on and off the field as he looks to do all he can to make a difference in the lives of others.
