One of the most exciting players in college baseball in the 2023 season, Nebraska star Brice Matthews put on a show with the Huskers as he finished the season with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, the first Nebraska player to ever do so. Rising across draft boards, Matthews was picked in the 1st round of the 2023 MLB draft by the Houston Astros. As he prepares for his pro career to begin, he is focused on impacting the community around him.
“I’ve always grown up going to church and I didn’t really understand much until high school when I wanted to go on my own and me and my friends would go to church and learn. I really started growing in college when I’d go to bible study with my teammates and FCA. It gave me a more clear understanding of the Bible and just understanding the word.”
For Matthews, it has often been in the midst of tragedy that he has had to lean on his faith more than ever before. As he has overcome obstacles throughout his life, he says that he can’t imagine where he’d be without faith as his centerpiece.
“I have lost people in my life that I thought I’d never lose and leaning on my faith helped me be in a better position mentally.”
“My faith and belief in God allow me to be free and know that whatever happens at the end of the day, God loves me and it’s all good.”
Matthews has quickly become a fan favorite for Houston, as fans anticipate his exciting style of play and seeing where his future leads him. As Brice looks towards that future, he says that he hopes to play for something bigger than himself. With whatever audience is watching, he looks to inspire and always glorify God.
“I just hope that I can give people the belief that they can do anything through Christ and just continue to have the faith.”
After just recently signing his contract with the Astros, Brice will soon begin play with their minor league affiliates as he begins his journey to the big leagues. While Brice’s accomplishments on the field are special, his humility continues to stand out through it all. Always crediting those around him, he looks to make an impact both on and off the field for years to come.
