“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
As quarterback Cade Klubnik put the finishing touches on a fairytale season in 2020, the Westlake Chaparrals were crowned Texas state champions for the second consecutive year, marking the first time in school history to ever accomplish that feat. As Klubnik skyrocketed his name on scouting lists and became one of the top quarterbacks in the 2022 class, he committed to Clemson to attend college after closing out his high school career. Guided by a foundation of faith and family, Cade Klubnik is on his way to accomplishing something great.
A native of Texas, Cade Klubnik has worked incredibly hard to get where he is today. But what impresses those who know Cade even more than his football skills are his leadership ones and who is becoming off the field. Cade’s girlfriend, Macey Matthews, has been a witness to his growth since they were both in middle school. She says, “It is pretty funny to think that I was a cheerleader at his very first middle school game, so I have got to see him grow as a player throughout the majority of his career. We have a text from sixth grade where Cade told me that he wanted to play varsity football just like his brother and maybe have the opportunity to play in college, which is really cool to look back on now that we are in our senior year.”
Now looking towards their college years, Macey says she is so proud of Cade and the way he carries himself. “Cade has always had a natural gift for the game, but I truly believe that it is his trust and identity in the Lord and his passion to be better every day that is what led him to where he is now.”
For both Cade and Macey, faith has been fundamental in their lives and their relationship with one another. Both grew up in Christian homes, but they say that in high school is really when it became a priority and focal point for them. Since then, they say faith has been a driving force in their relationship. Macey says it is the daily things that bring them closer.
“Some of the things we love to do to make sure our relationship is centered around Christ are simple things, such as listening and driving to worship music, doing a bible study, or asking each other how we can pray for each other. It is so amazing to see that when we individually grow our relationship with Christ, we are able to use that love and identity in Christ to build our love and relationship stronger.”
For Cade, the support from Macey has been critical in his growth on and off the field. He says, “It has helped me so much to just have someone that supports you through all your ups and downs, whether state championships or the loss of a friend. She has been there for me every step of the way and has just always been an amazing influence on how to handle situations through Christ.”
As Cade gears up for a run at a third consecutive state championship, he reiterates how he just hopes to use his gifts to glorify God and leave an impact on others.
“Faith has influenced me in so many ways. God has blessed me with so many relationships from the game that I will have the rest of my life. Football 100% has influenced my faith just by the ability to share His word through the game. I’ve been able to grow closer relationships with others and in the end closer to the Lord.”
Off to a 6-0 start to the year, Cade is looking to lead his team both as a leader on the field and as a friend, supporter, and brother off the field wherever life takes him and his teammates. After an injury in his last game will likely sideline him for the coming weeks, he says he is trusting god is in control even at the difficult moments.
Now looking towards playing collegiate football at one of the best programs in the country, Cade’s goals of representing Christ and inspiring others remain the same. Macey says that what Cade is doing on the field is amazing, but the person he is away from football is even more incredible.
“Getting to grow a relationship and love Cade is a privilege and I thank God every day he is a part of my life. If anyone ever gets the chance to know Cade at a personal level, they will know that apart from being a football player, he is an even greater person for who he is.”
