One of the top college pitchers in the game today, Florida right-hander Hurston Waldrep has helped lead the Gators to their appearance in the College World Series. After beginning his career at Southern Miss where he quickly became a star on the mound, Waldrep’s success has translated to Gainesville as he and the Gators prepare for their chance to bring home a National Championship. Throughout his career, Hurston has relied on his faith and says he hopes to play for something greater than himself.

Originally from the state of Georgia, Hurston says that faith has been a key part of his life for as long as he can remember. Growing up, Hurston says making it a priority has been monumental for him in his life and career on the mound.

“From the time I was born, my family has always been a part of a church. We have always believed in the word of God and my parents instilled that in me from a young age. I am very blessed to have grown up around His word and to be able to study His teachings on my own and it has really taken my faith to the next level. In recent years, I have really begun to dove deeper into His word and really understand what it means to be a follower of Christ.”

After helping the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss advance to the Super Regionals, Hurston entered the transfer portal where he would eventually end up with Florida. As he has become a pillar for the Gators in their search for a championship, Hurston says his faith guides him every time that he takes the field.

“Having God in my life changes the way I view every situation in my career. I know that He is walking with me every step of the way. Whatever happens, I know it is a part of his plan. I don’t ever have to question what happens, I just have to see it as an opportunity to grow in faith and as a person. No matter the highs or lows I know faith will carry me through the situation.”

Hurston’s success on the mound has also made him a top prospect in this year’s MLB Draft. Expected to be one of the first few college arms taken, Hurston says he is putting his future in God’s hands and is excited to see all that is ahead. As he prepares for what his career in baseball brings, he hopes to be remembered for something greater.

“Being at this stage of my career, I pray each and every day that I am a walking representation of the kingdom of God. I always want my words and my actions to represent the Lord even if someone doesn’t realize it at the moment. I want my social media and my actions to directly reflect the never ending love of my Heavenly Father. To be able to play at this level truly is a blessing and I thank him for every second of it because I know I wouldn’t be here without Him!”

As Hurston and the Gators prepare for their game against Virginia on Friday, Hurston remains at peace knowing it is all in God’s hands. Regardless of the situation, Hurston looks to always be a light and show the love of God both on and off the field. With his career only just beginning, Hurston looks to glorify God through everything that he does.
