Becoming one of the top pitchers in NCAA softball in just her freshman year, Ruby Meylan has quickly become a fan favorite for her passion, enthusiasm, and joy on the mound. Originally from Skutt High School in Omaha, Ruby was ranked #13 nationally in the class of 2022. After committing to Washington, she has quickly made her impact known in her first year with the program. As she has helped to lead the Huskies to the College World Series, she is guided by faith as she strives to have an impact with her platform.

Since arriving in Washington, Ruby says that she has seen faith become more a part of her life than ever before. After getting to campus and experiencing firsthand the struggles and pressures of being a Division 1 athlete, she says that relying on her faith has been key throughout her journey with the Huskies.

“When I got to college about a year ago, I realized how hard it was going to be having no one to fall back on with my family being so far away. I decided that I was going to have to rely on God and do everything I could to have a deeper relationship with him. I found a church just outside of Seattle that I go to with my teammates whenever I can and we also have a team bible study which has been so good.”

Helping the Huskies to a 43-13 overall record, Ruby has been a key to their success on the field. Pitching in 42 games over the course of the year, Ruby has put together an 18-5 record to go with her 2.19 ERA. Now playing in the Women’s College World Series, Ruby and the Huskies have their eyes set on the championship. On the field, Ruby says that her faith guides her whenever she takes the mound.

“My faith plays a huge role in my softball career. Playing at such a high level can be extremely hard. There are so many pressures and feelings that can be difficult to deal with. My faith gives me something to rely on. It helps knowing that I can talk to God and hear what he has to say through his word whenever I need it. My faith is my backbone.”

When watching Ruby pitch, one of the first things you will notice is the energy that she carries with her on the mound. With a deep drive to help her team win, she hopes those watching her will see her as more than just a pitcher. She wants to use her platform and time on the mound to inspire others to pursue their passion and never let anyone hold them back.

“If you’ve ever watched me play, you know how much I love competing. I hope that I can inspire people with my passion. I hope that people see a fire in me, not only in softball but in my faith.”

As the season winds down and Ruby prepares for the chance to pitch at the biggest stage in college softball, she is taking things one game at a time. Ruby says that each game is a chance to do what she loves, and through it all she just hopes that she can be someone young softball players throughout the country can look up to. Trusting in her faith and relying on God’s plan for her life, she looks to carry her passion with her everywhere that she goes.
