Named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year, San Diego State forward Nathan Mensah has played a key role in the Aztecs’ run to the Elite Eight. After taking down top-seeded Alabama, eyes are glued to the Aztecs as they prepare to play for their chance at a Final Four. Anchored by veteran leadership, Nathan Mensah says he wants to use his platform to be a light and allow God to work through him.

Originally from Ghana, Nathan grew up playing soccer before catching the eyes of scouts on the basketball court. After moving to the United States, Mensah was ranked a four-star recruit and would end up choosing San Diego State over schools that included Oregon, USC, and Texas Tech. Now in his 5th year with the program, he has helped the Aztecs rise to new heights. He says that his goals, however, lie far beyond just basketball. A star on the court, in the classroom, and around the community, Mensah says he wants to be a light wherever he goes.

“I want to be a shining light to bring people to Jesus through sports.”

Nathan says that to him, faith has meant everything. Throughout his journey, he says he has seen God working through every situation and is grateful for all the blessings that are in his life.

“Faith is everything to me. I don’t believe I am who I am today without my savior Jesus Christ.”

As Mensah has become a star on the court, his humility and grace are what continue to impress the most. With the goal of serving others, Mensah looks to make a difference in whatever way that he can.

As the Aztecs prepare for their matchup with Creighton, Mensah is soaking up every moment of his 5th year. As he and his team prepare to make their push for a national championship, Mensah looks to be a light and use his platform to point others to Jesus. Regardless of the outcome, Mensah says that he knows where his worth comes from and is grateful for every day.
