“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”

-Acts 20:24

A legend in the city of St. Louis and one of the most iconic faces in Major League Baseball, Adam Wainwright has crafted his entire MLB career so far with the St. Louis Cardinals, which includes 2 World Series Rings. As Adam Wainwright has been a consistent face in the Cardinals rotation, he has emphasized using his platform to give back to others. Along with his accolades, Wainwright has accomplished so much with all the lives he has changed throughout the entire world. Much of that work is driven by his faith, which Wainwright holds very close.

Throughout all of the highs and lows of his career, Adam Wainwright has consistently emphasized giving the glory to God and trusting Him with all that he has. “My faith has completely changed the way I look at baseball. I know that my platform is very important and that my witness for Jesus is at stake with the way I compete. I try to play the game in such a way that my teammates and opponents look at me with respect. Playing the game with intensity, and focus. Playing to win. Playing while knowing God is with me. This frees me up to compete to the best of my abilities that He’s given me.” That faith of Wainwright has also rubbed off onto other players in the clubhouse, especially younger guys. Wainwright has cultivated a culture in St. Louis that is full of support, encouragement, and love as he looks to lead others towards Jesus. “Being a member of the Cardinals for 17 spring trainings and 15 big league seasons has allowed me to help create a discipleship culture in St. Louis that couldn’t be had if I was changing places all the time.” By staying in St. Louis, Wainwright has also had the opportunity to build a foundation that has helped change the lives of many.

Since the beginning of his career, Wainwright always knew he wanted to give back. He always had a desire in him to make an impact. As he looked for specific areas he could make a difference, helping those that experience poverty and lack basic human needs struck with Adam and his wife, Jenny. They knew they wanted to help change the lives of others, and soon started their foundation, Big League Impact, in 2013. This foundation has helped support so many lives and has provided hope and basic necessities to those living in compromising situations throughout the world. Even as Wainwright has become a heralded face in St. Louis for his performance on the mound, it is his work off the field that continues to make the biggest difference. That work also included him being awarded the 2020 Roberto Clemente Award, given to the player who best represents sportsmanship and work in the community. At the start of the 2020 year, Wainwright also decided to start a Bible study for those interested in getting in the word with him throughout the year. The study, called Walking with Waino, has garnered thousands of followers and many have shared how much of an impact the experience has had.

Throughout his career, Wainwright has also leaned on a verse that he holds near to his heart as he has taken advantage of his platform to inspire others. That verse is Acts 20:24, which says “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” Wainwright loves this verse because it reminds him of why he takes the mound for the Cardinals. “My favorite verse is Acts 20:24. This verse shows me what our true purpose in life is… fulfilling Jesus’ mission for me…telling the world about the wonderful grace of God.” Wainwright strives to live by this through not only by his words, but his actions too. With everyone Adam meets he looks to love and encourage no matter their background. This has helped Wainwright develop a trust and bond with teammates and opponents that cannot be broken. For Wainwright, family is also incredibly important. The father of 4 girls and an adopted son, Wainwright strives to leave an impact daily on those in his household.

On the field, Wainwright has crafted years of success on the mound. But Adam knows that despite the results on the field, he looks to use his platform to make an impact that is so much greater than himself. He is changing lives everyday, and Adam Wainwright is so grateful for the opportunity to give back.
