“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
-2 Corinthians 12:9
A 3-star recruit out of Gilbert, Arizona, Brock Purdy wasn’t initially on everyone’s radar when he enrolled at Iowa State. But he has quickly turned himself into one of the best college quarterbacks in the country today and is a household name for the Cyclones. While Purdy has been making big plays on the field, he has also been a figure for inspiration off the field. As Purdy has racked up awards in football, such as being named Big 12 True Freshman of the Year in 2018 and Second Team All Big 12 in 2019, he has also received honors such as being named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List which exists to honor athletes that use their platform to serve others and make a difference off the field. As Purdy throws touchdown passes and leads his team to victory, it has been his faith that has kept him grounded.
Faith has been a priority for Purdy and the rest of his family for as long as he can remember. It has been the driving force for Brock throughout his life. “Faith is the reason why I do everything I do. It has always been important in my life and is what has gotten me to become who I am today.” That faith and focus have led Purdy to staying confident on the field and contributing to the community off the field as well. It has been Purdy’s goal to be an athlete that kids can look up to for not only how he performs on the field, but also for all the inspiration that he exudes off of it.
Brock Purdy has become a fan favorite for Iowa State as he stars on the field with great plays and quick thinking. Purdy credits his success on the field to God for allowing him the opportunity to play the game that he loves. “On the field, faith is actually what keeps me calm and consistent. I understand who I am playing for. Football influences my faith as it holds me accountable in my actions around my teammates.” Purdy has become a leader for the Cyclones and an inspirational figure throughout the world of college sports.
Brock Purdy has also been influenced by a verse that he holds close to his heart. 2 Corinthians 12:9 which says, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” This verse has helped Purdy keep humility at the forefront and remind him that what he has is from God. “One of my favorite verses is 2 Corinthians 12:9. This verse reminds me to remain humble and that we need the Lord for we are weak.” This verse has encouraged Purdy and helped him find strength to go out on the field on Saturday’s and be the leader for the Cyclones.
Although Brock Purdy has brought numerous successes to Iowa State, such as winning the 2021 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, he doesn’t want to be known solely for his football skills. Although he has posted incredibly impressive stats throughout his time with the Cyclones, he is motivated more by the impact he can have on others. As a leader for Iowa State he maintains keeping his priorities in order. As he influences so many, he will be one of the top quarterback names whenever he takes his talents to the next level. Until then, Purdy announced he will be returning to Iowa State for his senior year where he looks forward to changing lives both on and off the field.
