After setting high school records throughout his time at Coronado High School, Sawyer Robertson has cemented his name into the Texas high school football record books. Growing up in Lubbock, faith was also an important part of life for Sawyer and his family.

“I’ve been the stereotypical church baby. My grandfather was a preacher and growing up I was just always in a church. I feel like it was just something I did though, after getting to college my relationship really started to grow more because I was on my own for the first time in my life. I noticed I’ve been reading scripture more frequently and focusing on my quiet time in prayer and it has helped me adjust to college life.”

That adjustment has paid dividends for Sawyer, as he credits faith for helping guide his life both on and off the field.

Paired with Bulldog quarterback Will Rogers, Robertson and Rogers are credited as one of the top quarterback rooms in the country. As Sawyer prepares for his chance to lead the Bulldogs whenever that opportunity comes, he will do so with faith as his guide.

“My faith plays a role in my career because it is always there for me during the good or bad times. When times are tough I rely on my faith to lift me up even when I have a bad day and reminds me that God has me where He has me for a reason. Then when times are going well, my faith is always there to keep me humble and grounded because at the end of the day I’d be nothing without Jesus.”

Not only has that mindset paid off on the field, it has also equipped Sawyer to be a leader on the team away from it, even though he is only just in his second year on campus.

With the season just weeks away, Sawyer is cherishing every moment as a Bulldog. As he waits for his chance to take the field, he says he hopes to use every opportunity to point others to God.

“I hope to impact any and everybody that watches me play or hears me speak by my actions glorifying God. At the end of the day He gave me the abilities and opportunities to be where I’m at right now and I have accepted that this is my platform and want to lead people to Him using my platform.”

Sawyer says that he hopes to never look back at his career as something that lifted him up, but instead something he used to lift up others.

With high expectations for the Bulldogs, Mississippi State enters the year with loads of excitement behind the program. With fans anticipating the chance to compete with some of the best in college football, eyes will be glued to the Bulldogs as they take the field. Sawyer says he hopes that every chance he gets to play the game he loves is used to glorify God and inspire anyone watching.
