Known as one of the top prep arms from the 2022 MLB draft, pitcher Cole Phillips has had dreams of playing baseball as a pro for as long as he can remember. Originally committed to Arkansas baseball, Phillips was selected in the 2nd round of the MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves. After singing a pro contract and gearing for his first taste of pro ball, he says he has trusted in God throughout his journey.

Cole says that throughout his development, he has learned to trust God and his plan. This mindset was developed in him from a young age, where Cole says faith was always a part of life.

“I am extremely thankful that I was raised in a Christian household that my parents provided. I’ve always had a relationship with Jesus but I feel that it has only grown as I’ve gotten older.”

Cole had to rely on faith more than ever when, after the best year of his baseball career in his final season of high school, he tore his UCL on senior night. Cole says he learned that it was all part of God’s plan and timing.

“In the midst of such a successful first half of the year I couldn’t believe what just happened. Although it was tough to move on, I made a quick rebound. That would not have been possible without my relationship with the Lord. I was faced with the hardest part of my athletic career yet I felt strongest in my relationship with the Lord ever. He continues to show me every day that His plan is greater than ours.”

Now preparing to suit up in the Braves minor league system, Cole says his faith drives him every day as he takes the field.

“Faith plays a major role in my life as an athlete. As a Christian I strive to give God the glory in every aspect of life. I know that he has total control, so I try to give my all in every opportunity he presents me.”

Cole says that being a baseball player has given him a new perspective on how to live out his faith.

“Being an athlete I get to live out my dream while worshiping my Savior and spreading the light of His kingdom to others. He is my rock and I know no moment is too big and no obstacle is too difficult to overcome with Him on my side. It gives me confidence every time I step on the field and in all that I do.”

After making the decision to turn pro, Cole knows that eyes will be on him throughout his journey in the minor leagues. However, Cole says he just wants to use it as an opportunity to praise God.

“One of my many goals in life is to spread the gospel anyway I can. Being an athlete I feel that I have a platform for me to express my relationship with Jesus.”

Cole says playing pro baseball not only strengthens him on the field, but develops him away from it, too.

“This opportunity not only shows the world what I can do as a player but more importantly showcases the opportunity to develop a loving relationship with God. I will continue to push myself everyday so that I can have the chance to reach as many people as possible.”

Cole recently traveled to Atlanta, where he signed his first contract and envisioned himself on that field one day. As Cole prepares for the journey that lies ahead, he says he continues to trust God no matter what happens and knows that everything is in His hands.
