Coach Jeff Traylor - Champions Beyond the Field

Jeff Traylor, head football coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), embodies this narrative, leveraging his platform not just to win games, but to shape the lives of young men.

Traylor’s journey to coaching success is marked not only by his accomplishments on the field but also by his faith. Raised in a Baptist household in Gilmer, Texas, faith has always been a cornerstone of his life.

“Faith is the most important role,” he asserts, reflecting on the pivotal moments that shaped his career. Traylor’s journey intertwines his love for football with his passion for making a difference.

“Through probably some bad decisions and choices I’ve made along the way, I’ve done it both ways. I’ve done it with the Lord and I’ve done it Jeff’s way. It just works a whole lot better when I’m doing it the Lord’s way.”

His coaching philosophy is built on the foundation of faith, integrity, and selflessness. Traylor’s commitment to nurturing young athletes extends far beyond the field.

“I hope that my kids can see an example in me of someone who loves the Lord, wants to serve him,” he shares. His teams reflect these values, characterized by their selflessness, camaraderie, and love for one another.

Traylor’s coaching career spans over three decades, with notable successes at every level. His tenure at Gilmer High School, where he led the Buckeyes to three state championships and 12 district crowns, solidified his reputation as an incredible coach. But it’s not just about the wins and losses for Traylor; it’s about the impact he can make in the lives of his players.

“When I was young, I can remember my Sunday school teacher was a man named Dr. Larry Folden… I told him I really just believe that the Lord is going to put me on a stage one day that is going to be really large, and I’m going to have the opportunity to influence a lot of people with my beliefs,” he reflects. Traylor’s journey from the small-town football field to the stage of college football has not been an easy one, but one he remains grateful for every day.

“I say it all the time, I’m an imperfect person coaching imperfect people. There’s going to be imperfection. I’m living proof that God can hit a straight lick with a crooked stick.”

At UTSA, Traylor’s influence extends far beyond the football field. His leadership has transformed the program, instilling a culture of resilience, discipline, and excellence. Under his guidance, UTSA has experienced unprecedented success, with back-to-back Conference USA titles and multiple bowl appearances.

But perhaps Traylor’s greatest legacy lies in the lives he has touched off the field. Through his example of faith, humility, and compassion, he empowers young men to become leaders, role models, and champions in their own right.

“You don’t have to be perfect to love the Lord… I hope that no one in any way feels like because they’re not perfect they can’t love the Lord,” he emphasizes. “The Lord that I love, loves me in spite of my imperfections.”
