One of the most explosive and creative athletes in the 2023 class, Indiana basketball commit Jakai Newton has been praised for his skills since he was a child. As Jakai has grown older and made a name for himself as one of the top players in his class out of the state of Georgia, he will continue his basketball career as a Hoosier once he graduates high school. With unheralded skills, Jakai also possesses a passion and maturity for the game and for life that is far beyond his years. Preparing for whatever his next steps entail, he credits God for making him into the man he is today.

When Jakai was growing up, faith was always an important part of life for him and his family. Rooted in deep values instilled in him by his parents, he says that having faith has helped him grow both on and off the basketball court.

“Faith has always been a part of my journey. I always thank God for getting me this far and helping me reach my goals.”

Jakai is quick to say that he is still growing, further characterizing his impressive maturity and wisdom.

“I still have a lot more work to do with God and basketball but as I continue to strengthen my faith everything will work itself out.”

As Jakai has found himself on highlight reels with his explosiveness and energy on the court, it was at Indiana that he decided to continue his academic and athletic career. As he prepares for his days as a Hoosier, he says that faith is what guides him every time he takes the court.

“I believe God put me here to have a platform to showcase my talent and to help people.”

With that selflessness, Jakai also says he finds confidence knowing that everything is in God’s hands.

“My faith allows me to stay focused and not worry because I know God will take care of everything.”

As Hoosier fans excitedly wait for the days when Jakai will take the court at Assembly Hall, he will have a platform that is far greater than just the game of basketball. With that attention, Jakai says he hopes to use it for good and to give back to others.

“My goal is to have people be able to relate to the things I went through. To get where I’m at right now wasn’t easy, and it’ll only get harder. I just want people to see that hard work leads to opportunities and that without struggle you can’t build.”

With currently the 7th ranked recruiting class overall in college basketball for the class of 2023, the Hoosiers have a bright future ahead of them. Looking forward, Jakai says he hopes to use every opportunity he can to inspire others to always chase their dreams and go after what God has set out for them.
